– A little word about tunings –
One question you will inevitably ask yourself: What tuning will suit me? Which one will be right for me?
Of course we are happy to advise you on the way to your tuning. However, please understand that we cannot always answer this question accurately – because it is always a question of personal style and taste.
But basically you can’t do anything wrong so quickly: The sound of a handpan definitely shows its effect!
We prefer to make personal contact, e.g. by e-mail, webcam, Whatsapp, telephone or on site.
In most cases, with a few questions we would ask you, we can narrow down the tunings to just one or a few models.
Also worth mentioning: the tuning is not as complicated as it seems. With our professional experience, we have a certain perspective “in the scene”. If you don’t know much about music theory (which you don’t need as a handpan player!), it seems very difficult to keep an overview. An example: We take a tuning that sounds like it sounds and don’t change anything about its “statement”. We now give it 5 different names, change the pitch 4x, make different sound samples on this tuning and, bang, we have made 20 tunings out of one tuning, which are basically the same!
Here are a few tips for finding the tuning.
The spiritual path:
Of course, the best way is to listen to a tuning through a sound sample.
It should be noted: Every tuning creates its own ‘tuning’ in the room and in your own soul.
Different tones within a certain “collection” – that is, a tuning / scale – develop a certain relationship to each other when played.
These relationships give a statement of themselves, for example asking questions, giving answers, letting longing arise, creating tension, and much more!
It gets exciting when listening to the sound samples – which tuning speaks to me, which one touches my spirit at most?
If you sense a tendency, it’s fun to listen to it, then you’ve hit the bull’s eye.
If there is no tendency or no favorite, there is another ”systematic way”
The systematic way:
In our music system there are 2 distinctive characters called ‘major’ & ‘minor’. These are so-called “tone genders”.
A tuning is therefore usually based on one of these characters and also leaves a feeling in the player or listener.
It would be very useful to find out which “tone gender” you prefer.
A tuning in “major” triggers a cheerful, peaceful, happy character.
A tuning in “minor” is wonderfully suited for deep immersion in a distant world, melancholic-reflective, mystical, beautiful-spherical.
(The adjectives one would choose will vary depending on the listener’s sensibilities).
You could ask yourself what you want to do or what kind of person you are: – am I the type who is looking for something in a good tuning or rather someone who likes to dream away in mystical sounds?
Every song in our usual musical world is usually based on one of these two genders. With handpans, however, one can say that the minor scales are generally more popular – but of course the player decides that!
For those who know which scale they prefer but can’t decide which exact tuning it should be: From here you can’t do much wrong!
As I said: If you already have a favorite tuning that is not on our list or have a specific idea of a tuning , we can of course also create it, taking into account the possibilities!
If you still have questions, feel free to ask! đŸ™‚
Best wishes and have fun choosing a tuning!
